Planning PhotoShoot

- Possibly use Jake & Ana? (following

1. follow up on the idea of Jake being the singer/guitarist/keyboardist with either an acoustic guitar on his back or just a microphone around his shoulders.

2. Ana being the drummer with drum sticks in her hand drumming an imaginary drum kit?

- If decide to go with the idea of Jake having a microphone around his neck then can have him giving Ana a piggy back and she can drum the imaginary drum kit around his shoulders.

e.g.

- something similar to this but obviously slightly different and with a bit more shadow, white background with maybe just one "lamp light" lighting one side of them?
- Both smiling heavily/laughing
- Both wearing dark edge clothing...
- Jake with a white muscle shirt and on top his black blazer, skinny jeans and converse
- Ana wearing converse, hair down (falling over Jake's shoulders?) skinny jeans or maybe short shorts with no tights? open button checkered shirt and white top with maybe a scarf? or maybe skinny jeans with white high tops?
- Both no make up, just as natural as possible
- Ana leaning in as if she is laughing in Jake's ear?

5 Line Paragraph :)

- my new music magazine is going to be all about retro fun and alternative music which appeals to a certain brand of people. It will appeal to it's target audience because of the different way it's presented compared to other music based magazines. The house style will be mainly based on browns and autumn/summer based colours. The tone and register will be very layed back, addressing of the audience will be very informal, almost as if talking to a friend.

Photoshoot samples

- These are some sample photos of the kind of shoots that I would be interested in. This is simply because they are not the norm of standing and facing the camera and having your photo taken. They're more inventive and have a lot more creativity put into them.
- These are the kinds of photos and ideas that I want to put into my music magazine, so that my audience knows they're about to experience something different.

Masthead of Music Mag idea

this is my first idea for a masthead for my magazine
I am not sure if this is going to be my final idea or whether I am going to improvise on it a bit more and expand on the design.
I have made the edges around the guitar a little rough because I'm trying to portray the artistic interests of my readers.

Mood Board/Reader Profile for Music Magazine

My mood board :

I chose these images because my readers have proven themselves to be quite different and visiual. So they prefer style and appearance rather than content, especially when it comes to magazines. They are very much into their music as well as fashion, whilst still maintaining that air of being 'different'.

Reader Profile:

Average Age is 18

They tend to mostly listen to Rock music and then second favourite is 'other' which can mean something alternative. It backs up the mood board I showed of my readers being individuals and not conforming.

My readers best describe themselves as being 'funny'. So practical jokers and fun loving people. Easy going.

Target Audience for my Mag.

Age range: between 16 and 25

Musical tastes: varied and many, so anything from R&B to POP, but probably mainly aimed at the more 'Indie' crowd.

Styles: again mainly 'Indie' based people who are into the less ordinary.

Double Page Spread Analysis 3

This double page spread has been done in a rather retro style to signify the style of the era in which Jimi Hendrix's music was made. Because the article is about Jimi Hendrix then the retro style to the article really brings HIS style across to the readers. On the right hand side they have used many iconic images to bring across points made in the article itself. The layout has been very well put out so that all of the images are in one corner and can easily be found as reference.
The lettering is a plain black on a white background. On the left hand side they have included a huge image of Jimi Hendrix in mid lyric all along the far side of the page. They have also included a pull quote using the same retro style background as the rest of the layout.

Double Page Spread Analysis 2

This double page spread has been very simply done. There are two seperate images on each part of the two pages, showing Paul Mcartney recording his album, which is what the article is about. The article has been written out in black lettering on a white background and in a very simple Times New Roman style font. On the left hand page they have also included a few iconic images to help readers relate to the article itself. They have even put a pull quote at the top of the article on the left hand side using a background of a green apple whihc is then related to in the third image as being one of Paul Mcartney's record covers.

Double Page Spread Analysis 1

This double page spread is rather compact. The interview is on the left hand side and has clearly marked questions and answers. Each question has been marked out with black lettering and a cream coloured strip outline to signify that it is a question. In general the lettering is all white on a black background. The imge which is shown on the right has followed the colour scheme of the questions by having Ian Watkins wearing black and the backdrop behind him being of a cream coloured nature. They have also included a little 'fact bank' bubble on the image, almost used in a pull quote way, to outline the main points taken from the article/interview. They have also included a white arrow at the bottom of the interwiew, pointing towards the image to clearly signify that the interview is about the person in the photo (Ian Watkins).

Contents Page Analysis 3

This contents page has been done in a very simple way. All of the content is clearly marked out in an easy-to-read list. It is in black lettering on a light background. Underneath each title of everything listed there is a short description of what the content is about, to draw readers in to read the articles themselves instead of just browsing. They have also included an iconic image of Bob Marley alongside the content to show that he is also a main part of the magasine as well as Paul Mcartney and The Beatles who are on the front cover. They have even included a Pull Quote from Bob Marley at the bottom of the content, this would come across to the audience as being a rather special issue.

Contents Page Analysis 2

This contents page is quite crowded. There is a lot going on and I think at first look, readers would feel quite intimidated by it and not really know where to look to get what they want. But the magasine has tried to make it slightly more clear by putting titles above the listed content and underneath each title they have clearly marked out the content in black bold lettering on a white background. To the side of each thing listed they have put a page number in red. They have also included a lot of imagery on this contents page and carefully placed it around each section of content to allow the readers to relate to what is listed. They have also put a huge photo at the very top of the page to show what the magasine is about this week.

Contents Page Analysis 1

This particular contents page is very clearly layed out. There are 4 different images that have been used to signify the main content of the magasine. Each main content has been clearly written out in black lettering on a white background with a red line to underline it. And under each red line there is a short description about what the article in question is about, in case the reader did not immediately identify with the content from the title alone.
The images to show the main content are rather iconic and don't need a title because the reader's should KNOW what it is about just from the image. This particular part might just be for avid reader's who know the magasine well and are attracted to the normal artistic main content used in the magasine.
They have also made the image of Matt Bellamy HUGE among all of the others because of course he is on the front cover and his is the Lead Article, therefore they signify all of this simply from the size of the image. The image of him that they have used is also a deep contrast to the one on the front cover where he appears a "hell raiser" whilst in this image he looks really calm, cool and collected which will intrigue the readers to read more.

Front Cover Analysis 3

Masthead: is hidden behind Paul Mcartney's head, portraying that the magasine doesn't even really need to have it's Masthead showing because it has such a vast amount of reader's that they will just KNOW that it's Mojo magasine simply by seeing the 'M'. White bold lettering on a totally black background, stands out completely, attracts the eye very well.
Pull Quote: is very simple and rather difficult to spot as it kind of blends in with the rest of the Lead Article but it's quite a bold statement about how Paul Mcartney "survived" which would make reader's want to open the magasine and hear about what one of the greatest musicians of all time went through after the Beatles' collapse.
Lead Article: is very clearly marked out in big, bold, white lettering and has quite an extensive title. It also has "exclusive interview" written above it which draws the audience in to read about what is so exclusive about it. This is written on a red background with white lettering which really stands out from the black background.
The Left Third: is very cramped. The magasine has crammed a lot of BIG names (in the music business) in on one Left Third. This could draw in a phenomenal amount of reader's from all different pools of taste in music. They have just simply used the same white lettering on a black background which is very effective and comes across easily.
Main Image: is very simple but again very effective. They have simply used an old photograph of The Beatles when they were in their prime but they have edited it so that Paul Mcartney is in the forefront. This tells the audience that the Lead Article is simply about him and not really about any other memeber of The Beatles.
Skyline: has quite a lot included in it. It speaks to 3 different audiences and again has used the same white lettering on black background, but the magasine has also included small images to represent the content. This way if reader's don't recognise what it is about by the text alone they may relate to it by one of the images used, because an image may seem familiar to them (for example the Bob Marley one which is used Internationally).

Front Cover Analysis 2

Masthead: the masthead has been made to look like it is being shattered by Matt Bellamy's (lead singer of Muse and featured on front cover) guitar. This would attract audiences because they would see that with graphics and editing such as this, the issue was a unique one and the magasine itself was interesting and unique.

Pull Quote: is not immediately visible to the naked eye but is situated just above the Lead Article. It is in black coloured lettering on a dark background which makes it hard to spot, but it has been put in bold so that it makes it a littler more clear to read. It would also attract audiences because the quote they have used is a rather interesting one and it would make readers want to open the magasine to see what context the quote was used in.

Lead Article: is very clear to see. It is in bold and big white coloured lettering on a dark background. They have also used just the band's name to pull audience's in because they are such a well known band and have such a wide and vast following that their name alone on a magasine would attract all kinds of people to read the magasine. The font is also very sharp which attracts the eye easily.

The Left Third: is cramped full of information to attract all kinds of audiences. They have again used the same bold, white, sharp and big lettering to attract the eye. But underneath each heading have included a mini-description in red lettering. The red and white alternation represents the colours of Q magasine, again indicating to the reader that this particular issue is unique.

Main Image: is very well set out. Plain gray background, which tells the audience that the magasine itself doesn't need fancy backdrops or gadgets to shout to it's audience, in fact Q has developed a signature for having plain backgrounds with shocking main images. This Main Image is no different. And as mentioned above they have Matt Bellamy striking his guitar against the Masthead of Q. It relates to the Lead Article, stating Matt Bellamy is "out of control" and it also draws in readers not just because it is an issue about Muse but also because they want to know what's caused Matt Bellamy to look the "rebel" in the Main Image.

Skyline: is extremely simple and shouts out "The UK's Biggest Music Magasine". Black background and white lettering, stands out very well and attracts readers because the statement itself is rather bold, but also because they will want to open the magasine to see if it really is the biggest music magasine in the UK.

Front Cover Analysis

This is the front cover of the Reading & Leeds issue of NME magasine for 2009.

In some ways it has a very simple layout but in other respects it is quite crowded, there seems to be an information overload. The larger audience attracted to this magasine would be Music Lovers and a range of 14-25yr old people. But this particular issue could be for anyone 15+ because it is about Reading & Leeds and such a wide age range attends those festivals every year that honestly anyone could buy this particular issue. It's appealing to the masses, and on top of those two groups it's appealing to the vast majority of Kings of Leon fans, who could potentially be persuaded by this magasine to go to Reading & Leeds simple because their favourite band is headlining, a fact which is clearly stated on this front cover and immediately draws people in to read more in order to buy the correct tickets to see them live.

College Mag Progress

The research...

The font's that I researched were varied, I liked several different styles, but I really wanted a good font to convey what kind of magasine it was.

But I found it a little too preppy and that wasn't really what I was looking for, I wanted a font that showed it was an education related magasine but that it was also meant to be current.

Then I found this font called Varsity:

I didn't want this to be in a dull black colour so I changed it to a purple colour by spraying over the text in a grafiti kind of way.

Some layouts that I was interested in were rather close up ones and not 'serious' faced ones just really layed back silly ones such as:
